THE STORY OF….
Carolan’s Rambles
In March 2020, all live music making stopped. Coole Music founder Katharina Baker made the decision to move all ensembles online. In January 2021, she approached Galway conductor Sinead Hayes (Ivernia Arts) to create a project to engage the whole music school with the life and music of Turlough Carolan, an Irish composer and harpist active in the west of Ireland in the 17th and 18th centuries, and so the project began…
LEARNING THE MUSIC
All groups worked in Zoom workshops with Sinead to learn about Carolan’s life, and learn one of his tunes, as well as a traditional Irish tune.
CREATIVE RESPONSES
All groups had a tailor made Activity Book with prompts for creative responses to Carolan’s life and music.
NEW COMPOSITIONS
The young musicians were encouraged to compose their own tunes inspired by Carolan’s life and music.
SHOW ME THE MONEY!
By thinking about the difficulties faced by Carolan as a professional musician in Ireland, we started a conversation around the value of music.
We started with the life and music of
Turlough Carolan….
